For 131 years, our mission is to inspire and enable all youth, especially those who need us most, to become responsible, productive and caring citizens. We provide girls and boys, ages 5 – 18, with effective diverse programs and services, including case management, education, athletics, and the arts.

POSITION: Deputy Director DEPARTMENT: Administration
REPORTS TO: Executive Director HOURS OF WORK: Full-time
WORK STATUS: Exempt
The Deputy Director will have both internal- and external-facing responsibilities and partner closely with the ED in the design and alignment of strategic priorities to ensure growth in organizational capacity and community impact. Working with the leadership team, the Deputy Director will ensure that compliance and best practices are developed and upheld in administration, human resources, case management, organizational planning and youth development programming. The Deputy Director will cultivate and sustain relationships with stakeholders and other service providers to promote the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester’s mission and work.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
External-Facing, Community-Building, and Collaboration
- Represent the Executive Director and Boys & Girls Club of Worcester at city, state and federal agencies, youth-serving consortiums, industry-group conferences, professional associations, and other public venues, as requested by the ED.
- Oversee management agreements with current and potential partners, ensuring that quality services are provided and the collaboration is mutually beneficial to both parties.
- Partner with the Executive Director and other members of leadership in maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead and manage organization-wide projects or initiatives; convene key stakeholders, and help drive decisions. Identify opportunities to engage with other agencies and cultivate collaborative processes.
Communication and Thought Leadership
- Manage internal and external communications (non-fundraising): draft materials for communication including reports, talking points, and presentations, in collaboration with other Club colleagues.
- Coordinate agendas for internal and external meetings including leadership meetings, and Club-hosted community meetings and events (MA Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs and YouthConnect).
- Develop thought leadership around specific topics and emerging practice areas in youth development, behavioral health, anti-racist practices, etc.
Supervision, Training, and Professional Development
- Supervise, collaborate with and provide support to:
- Director of Outreach (oversees outreach sites in Great Brook Valley, Plumley Village and outreach programs such as Shannon Initiative),
- Director of Case Management (MSW, providing behavioral management support to staff and youth),
- HR Manager, and
- Unit Director.
- Serve as a mentor/coach; be a visible, approachable sounding board.
- Collaborate with Leadership Team, utilizing feedback from employees, to help develop individualized staff development plans, as well as youth development training sessions held three-times a year (full week of training).
Compliance
- Oversee annual financial audit and insurance bids; provide support to in-house accountant
- Maintain a close relationship with the Club’s auditors and insurers, assess and manage organization’s risk and liability.
- Negotiate insurance claims, contracts with vendors, and major purchases in the best interests of the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester and ensure that vendors reflect the Club’s mission.
- Develop, implement, and manage an organization-wide compliance program to ensure the organization operates in accordance with state and federal laws.
- Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
- Determine compliance metrics and establish a system for tracking them.
- Oversee the organization’s ongoing HR function, including partnering with and assisting designated staff for hiring, supervision, personnel policy compliance, record keeping, payroll, and separation processes.
- Manage security policies and practices for the protection of personnel records.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 12-plus distinguished years in a senior management position in a nonprofit organization.
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in human resources, nonprofit management, social work, or education preferred.
- Commitment to addressing inequities and developing a culture of accountability and inclusivity in the workplace and community.
- Passionate about Boys & Girls Club of Worcester’s mission and impact.
- Familiarity with Worcester/Massachusetts stakeholder community.
- Proven leadership and mentor experience with capability of fostering a collaborative environment; exhibits strong skills in supervision and community organization.
- Can respond with flexibility to reasonable changes in work priorities and circumstances.
- Highly organized with great time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule (attend early morning/late evening meetings and events when needed) with an understanding this is not a “nine to five” job.
- Has a sense of humor; checks ego at the door.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – youth staff, professional staff, volunteers, and donors from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with staff, leadership, clients, and stakeholders, and to deliver clear, concise communication material.
- Possess strong analytic, problem-solving, and listening skills.
- Comfortable leading effective meetings and work sessions, with all levels of staff and leadership.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Must have or be willing to obtain a compliance/HR certification.
- Exemplify strong knowledge of industry protocols and best practices.
- Possess a strong moral code and sense of ethics.
