The boxing team, a boxing licensure program, individual workouts, and self-defense clinics are the main components of the Boxing & Fitness Program at the Boys & Girls Club. All four of these activities are supervised and coordinated by an experienced boxing professional, and are focused on personal safety and self-defense. Member-to-member teaching, community service projects, and Club service projects are important elements of this program that seeks to positively engage students in their community and with each other.
Demek “Joey” Edmunds won his first national title at the Silver Gloves Championship in Missouri in March 2011. Joey and two of his teammates, Mike Briggs Jr. and Jamaine Ortiz competed in Alabama at the 2011 Junior Olympic Championship. At the end of three days of competitions, Demek stood champion, was titled “Junior Olympic Champion”, and brought home the gold! These three athletes, and several more of our boxers are well on their way to joining the ranks of our boxing champions. World champions Jose Rivera and Edwin Rodriguez are Boys & Girls Club alumni, who with guidance by our knowledgeable and dedicated staff fought their way to top championship titles.
